5 Questions to Ask at Your Next Physical

While diet, exercise and other lifestyle choices are a good indicator of your health, you don’t see the bigger picture until you find out what’s going on internally during your yearly physical. In order to make the most of the appointment and take control of your own health, ask your doctor these five questions.

1. Has my health changed over the year? If your health has stayed the same or improved since your last visit, you know to keep up the good work that’s been benefitting you. If your health has worsened, you know it’s time to make some changes.

2. Am I at a higher risk for any illnesses due to my family history? Some people have a higher chance of coming down with certain genetic or hereditary illnesses and must be proactive to avoid or detect such illnesses. Being aware of this risk helps you take the necessary steps to maintain the best possible health. a laptop computer sitting on top of a table

3. Am I at risk for heart disease? The number one cause of death in the US is heart disease, so understanding your risk and how to reduce it can literally be a lifesaver. Your doctor will test your blood pressure and cholesterol and offer suggestions based on the results to help you manage your heart health.

4. Am I due for any screenings? In addition to monitoring heart health, certain screenings may be necessary to test for other issues. Your age, gender and family history may be cause for preventative screenings.

5. What are the side effects of this medication? If you’re prescribed a new medication, it’s important to understand the side effects and ensure that it won’t interact negatively with another medication you currently take.
